It was the colonies that inhabited this area in Africa. France, Spain, Portugal, and Italy had colonies in these areas up to this day. As a result, the African population came from the colonies to these countries up North.

North Africa is part of Africa, which is a continent. It is not a continent however in its own right.
Basically French North Africa was controlled by Vichy a German puppet. A lot of fighting took place in Italian North Africa and into Eygpt - then a British puppet. No actual countries were "Occupied" as such. Modern countries formed from or including bits of these areas are - Algeria, Tunisa, Libya and Eygpt (obviously)
