Over the best part of 600 years, many countries and places have been under Spanish Control. When the Royal families of Castille and Aragon united in 1492, Castille already had Portugal under it's control, and Aragon had the Kingdom of Two-Sicilies (which included most of Italy) and Sardinia. Spain later went on to conquer a large proportion of the Globe. In Europe they controlled the Netherlands, Luxemburg, Belgium, parts of Germany, parts of France, and parts of the Austrian and Holy Roman Empires. In The Americas they controlled ALL of south America (After the Spanish-Portuguese war Portugal ceded Brazil to Spain), roughly two thirds of what is now the USA, parts of Canada, All of Central America (From Mexico to Panama) and most of the Caribbean. In Asia the Phillipeans, and various ports in India and Sri Lanka (again ceded by Portugal after the Spanish-Portuguese war). In Africa, the small parts of Morocco bordering Spain was Spanish, as was the Country of Western Sahara (then known as Spanish Sahara) and Spanish Guinea (now Known as Equatorial Guinea). Also, there was a series of small places in Africa which were ceded by the Portuguese e.g. Sao Tome Principe and Zanzibar etc.

Overall, it was the second Largest Empire Ever, and the first Global Empire.

Strictly speaking, the idea of "Spain" or the country of "Spain" came into existence solely as an agreement between the monarchies of Castille and Aragon to unite in the face of increasing French power and later provide for the absorption of the independent Principality of Navarre (23 years later). Since Spain formed in 1492, no country has ever successfully invaded Spain with the exception of Napoleonic France from 1803-1814.

If the question is asking, which countries controlled all or part of the Iberian Peninsula in the areas currently occupied by the Kingdom of Spain, then there are a great number of answers. Greek and Phoenician (later Carthaginian) colonies lined the Mediterranean edge of Spain at around 500 B.C.E.. The first empire to actually occupy the Peninsula was the Roman Empire from around 100 B.C.E. to 411 C.E.. Eventually Roman Hispania gave way to the Visigoth Kingdom. The Visigoths were overrun by the Muslim Berber Armies of General Tariq who established Umayyad Caliphate control of the majority of the Peninsula in 711 C.E.. Within 40 years, the Umayyad Caliphate in Spain became independent of the Middle East and remained the dominant power in Spain for another 300 years. In the north, small Christian Kingdoms formed such as the Kingdom of Leon, the Principality of Asturias, the Kingdom of Castille, the Basque Provinces, the Principality of Navarre, the Kingdom of Aragon, and the Catalonian Counties. They made strategic alliances and were able to to push the Umayyad Caliphate halfway out of the peninsula. During this period, the countries began to merge. Leon absorbed Asturias, Castille absorbed the Basque Provinces, and Aragon absorbed the Catalonian Counties. The Umayyad Dynasty failed in 1038 C.E., leaving the Muslim South of Spain divided into 60 different city-state kingdoms called Taifas. In order to bolster Muslim strength and expand their empires the Moroccan Dynasties of the Almoravids and Almohads conquered all of the Taifas successively and pushed the Christian Kingdoms back north. However, by the 13th century, the Almohads had fallen and the Muslim Kingdoms became Taifas again. Castille and Leon formed the unitary Kingdom of Castille-Leon (also known as Castille). Portugal separated from their alliance with Castille and pursued independence. Valencia and the Balearic Islands joined with Aragon. The last Muslim Taifa Kingdom, the Nazari State outlived its brethren by 200 years, finally being extricated in 1492, by the combined might of Castille and Aragon. It was at this point that the unified territory of Spain was born.
