Eddie Mabo was exiled from Mer, Murray Island, because he was a paediaphile! In 1972 he tried to return to the Island after the death of his father, but the Island Council refused to allow him to return. After hus death, he was buried in Townsville and his grave was vandellised. His body was exumed & relocated to Mer, Murray Island, although the Island Council would only allow him to be buried in bushland on the opposite side of the Island to the main village. The Australian Government financed a large shrine to be built, which appears odd in the location chosen. The Island Council, which is headed by close relatives of Mabo's, do not freely speak of him, or the incidents that lead to his being exiled.
