Father Isaac Jogues, a Jesuit missionary, described New Netherland as a land of both opportunity and challenges. He noted the area's potential for conversion and the presence of diverse Indigenous peoples, but also highlighted the difficulties posed by the harsh environment and the complexities of colonial relationships. His experiences reflected the broader struggles of European missionaries in navigating cultural differences while seeking to spread Christianity. Overall, Jogues's writings emphasized the rich but complicated tapestry of life in New Netherland during the early colonial period.
St. Isaac Jogues was tomahawked to death and later decapitated.

Nwoye's new name symbolizes not only his conversion to Christianity, but also his role as the first son of many who will eventually convert. Isaac was Abraham's first son, with Abraham being the ancestral father of a great nation of Israelites; Nwoye was Okonkwo's first son. Further, the famous story of Abraham and Isaac called upon Abraham to sacrifice his son to god. Isaac's brush with death, was much like Nwoye being cast out of his family, and being treated as dead by his father. Nwoye is reborn as a Christian with a new name.
Isaac was the second son of Abraham, but the first with his wife Sarah. Isaac was the one who was almost sacrificed by Abraham on Mt. Moriah. The line of Jesus and all Christians and Jews trace their ancestrory through Isaac. Isaac father Jacob and Esau. Jacob was later renamed by God. His new name was Israel. He father the twelve tribes of Israel, of which all Israelites trace their lineage to one of the tribes.
