Approximately 75 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous period, North America was characterized by a distinct geography. Much of the continent was covered by a shallow inland sea known as the Western Interior Seaway, which split the landmass into two main regions: Laramidia to the west and Appalachia to the east. The Rocky Mountains were beginning to form, and the climate was generally warm, supporting diverse ecosystems with dinosaurs and other prehistoric life. The overall shape of the continent was quite different from today, with Coastlines and landforms altered by tectonic activity and erosion.
