New Jersey was a middle colony so it had rich soil and the farms produced surplus crops which could be sold as "cash crops. By 1759 they were producing 80,000 barrels of flour a year. They also grew corn, wheat, beef, pork, and sent these to large cities of New York and Philadelphia. There were also glass, textile, and paper production. Shipyards and iron mines were also important. By 1770 they were building 400 ships a year.
