The houses were wattle and daub houses. This means they were built with branches woven together with mud and straw smeared over the top of the wattle and then white washed. A thatch roof was put on the top. It was one room with a fireplace and a dirt floor. In the winter it was cold and wet and in the summer hot. It smelled of wood smoke and lard/tallow candles ( so did the people). It was cheap to make and could be repaired with a few things.
