The United States and Great Britain agreed to joint occupation of the Oregon Country through the Oregon Treaty of 1818. This arrangement allowed both nations to settle and conduct trade in the region, which was highly sought after for its resources and strategic importance. The joint occupation lasted until the mid-1840s, when tensions over territorial claims eventually led to the Oregon Treaty of 1846, which established the U.S.-Canada border along the 49th parallel.
