Mexico fought a war against the United States and lost. This meant the loss of almost half of its territory, including present-day California, Texas and all the states in between.
The issue of slavery in the territory ceded by Mexico was decided by the Compromise of 1850, which allowed residents to determine whether to allow slavery through popular sovereignty. This meant that the territories of New Mexico and California could decide on the slavery issue for themselves when applying for statehood.
At the very least, Mexico became an overseas territory of the Spanish Empire. Also, all peoples inhabiting Mexico were eventually conquered; this meant their culture was destroyed and most of them died to European-brought diseases, such as smallpox. Then, culture, language and religion from Spain was imported, transforming Mexico into a Spanish-speaking, Catholic country.
Originally, what is known today as New Mexico formed part of the Territorio de Nuevo Mexico (New Mexico Territory) as well as some of the Sonoran Territories (specifically, the Mesilla Valley which is now part of southern Arizona and New Mexico). Both territories belonged to Mexico.During the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848, Mexico lost the New Mexico Territory. Later on, by means of the Gadsden Purchase in 1853, Mexico sold the Mesilla Valley to the United States.
That Mexico lost almost half of its territory, including the area of present-day California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, as well as parts of Wyoming, Colorado, Oklahoma and Kansas.
