Many cultures developed in America and everywhere else because it is was not easy to travel long distances and people generally stayed in small local groups. As those groups became more distant from one another, they became more different culturally, as well. For example, the five Iroquois nations of the Northeast have the same general culture, but it's very different from the Navaho culture of the Southwest.
