In a word, yes. When threatened, they can secrete a sticky white substance from the parotoid glands on their backs. This poison is used to deter some predators from snacking on them, but some are in fact immune to the poison. In humans, this poison can cause illness if swallowed. Make sure not to touch your face after holding a toad and you should be fine. (And no, you cannot get warts by handling these toad) All states have poisonous toads you much check out which ones are and re not.
