All Australian Penny questions are updated.
An Australian 1953 Penny minted in Perth has a dot (.) after the (A) in AUSTRALIA (AUSTRALIA.). All other Pennies were minted in Melbourne and have no mintmark.
If you refer to the "diamonds" on the obverse side of Australian Pennies (and all other Australian coins from 1953 to 1964), they are merely a spacer. The function was previously performed by a semicolon and/or a full stop on pre-1953 coins.
All Australian Pennies issued from 1911 to 1964 inclusive weigh 9.45 grams.
Please check your coin. All Australian 1920 Pennies were minted at either the Melbourne or Sydney Mints. None were minted in London or Calcutta.
The majority of Australian Pennies with no Mint Mark were minted at the Melbourne Mint. The Sydney Mint was closed in 1926. All other Australian Pennies will have one of a variety of Mint Marks on them indicating that they were either minted at the Perth Mint, or a variety of foreign Mints.
Not all coins need a mintmark. All Australian 1919 Pennies were minted in Melbourne. For reasons that are not explained, most 1919 Australian Pennies had no mintmark, others had a dot above the top scroll and below the bottom scroll, and others had a dot below the bottom scroll.
All circulating pre-decimal Australian currency was progressively withdrawn from circulation and sent back to the Royal Australian Mint to be melted down.
Nobody knows. Since there were already sufficient Pennies in circulation at that time, they are still arguing about why the 1930 Penny was minted at all.
All Australian Pennies were dated. It is possible you have a traders token which should have the traders business name on them. Alternatively, you may have a trick or novelty coin.
All Australian Pennies minted from 1938 to 1964 inclusive feature a kangaroo on the reverse. The only Australian coins to feature wheat was the 1938 to 1964 inclusive, silver Threepence coins.
The "H" is the mintmark indicating that the coin was minted at the Heaton Mint in Birmingham. All 1912 and 1915 Australian Pennies were minted at the Heaton Mint. Also, the "H" will appear under the lower scroll and above the date rather than after the date. Some 1912, 1918 and 1919 British Pennies were also minted at the Heaton Mint. These have the "H" to the left of the date.
