The California grizzly bear, a subspecies of the brown bear, is a symbol of strength and resilience in California's history and culture. Though it was declared extinct in the early 20th century due to habitat loss and hunting, it remains an iconic representation of the state's natural heritage. The bear is featured on the California state flag, serving as a reminder of the state's wilderness and the importance of conservation efforts. Its legacy continues to inspire environmental advocacy and a connection to California's diverse ecosystems.

Yes. The California state animal is the California grizzly bear. Unfortunately, the last California grizzly was shot in 1922. There are, however, plans afoot to reintroduce the grizzly back into some of its former ranges - including the Golden State. As a related bit of information, there is a bit of debate over whether the California grizzly was "different" enough to be a subspecies of the grizzly. But with the last ones gone, we will likely never know. Links are provided.
