George Washington

If you'd like it to be traced back further...

George Washington's immigrant ancestor was his great grandfather John Washington, who had come from Purleigh, Essex. His ancestors had lived at a manor in the village of Sulgrave in Northamptonshire, but before that in Washington Old Hall, in the village of Washington. His earliest recorded ancestor was William de Hertburne, who changed his name to William de Wessyngton after being given the manor.

Washington, which is located outside Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Sunderland, was originally a village but has now grown into a medium-sized town which is joined onto Sunderland (which is twinned with Washington DC). Its name comes ultimately from Old English and means "the estate (ton) of the people (ing) of Hwaessa, or Wassa".
