the name New Zealand was given by the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman, one of the original European 'discoverers' of Aotearoa (NZ).

It refers to a place in his homeland by the name of Zeeland.

Aotearoa means "Long White Cloud" in Maori. This name is attributed to the wife of historic captain Kupe when he travelled here and discovered NZ in the distant past (1000AD-1400AD).
