A majority of Panamanians are of mixed European White and Native American background. They are referred to as "Mestizos" (masculine) or "Mestizas" (feminine) in Spanish.

There are substantial minorities of people that are mostly of European or Amerindian background. Afro-Panamanians, brought originally in the West African slave trade, are another ethnic group present. There are also some Afro-Carribbean migrants, forming another group among Black Panamanians.

The Chinese are the largest of recently arriving groups that are not West African, European or Indigenous Panamanian.
