The Protestant Reformation.
Christianity is the oldest religion in Europe.
The most common religion is Roman Catholicism.(catholic)
The eastern orthodox is a religion that was developed in Europe when the ''Vandals'' as you might know invaded the western part of Europe. It fell into the dark ages. The Eastern Europe celebrated and worshiped eastern orthodox. This religion is Christian.
Some differences between Russia and Western Europe are that Russia is more Orthodox Christian and western Europe is more into Catholic religion. Russia has communism, but western Europe has democratic government. Other differences are that Russia has a strong military and loads of military weapons, but western Europe has none or less.
The largest religion in Western Europe is Catholicism, which is the largest branch of Christianity. However, the fastest growing "religion" in Western Europe is no religion, as more and more Europeans in general are becoming unaffiliated or recognized Atheists.
For many years it had been Christianity, but for the last many years, the majority possess Agnostic views and believe largely in Secular Humanism. To call Western Europe in general "Christian" is a falsehood. There may still be a connection to a "Christian" past and some state churches remain subsidized by the state, their teachings are largely secular and no longer based on Scripture and Christian faith. There are some free confessional churches which survive without subsidy, but they are by far the minority.
The most widespread religion is Christianity.
