Union soldiers went out at night looking for the fugitive who was on the run. Most of those who lived in the North generally supported Lincoln and the Republican Party's opposition to slavery. They loved and revered him. Some in the South did as well, but Southerners typically favored the Confederate Army, so they were not as sympathetic to Lincoln's death. There was outrage and sadness among those who mourned Lincoln, and there were even calls of retaliation against the South.
