He stopped pushing for annexation by the US.
In 1836 and again in 1841.
He was the First President of the Republic of Texas from 1836 to 1838 and the Third President from 1841 to 1844.
Sam Houston served as the first president of the Republic of Texas from 1836 to 1838 and again from 1841 to 1844. His terms focused on establishing the new nation’s government, promoting peace with Native American tribes, and seeking annexation to the United States. During his presidencies, Houston faced challenges such as financial instability and political opposition, particularly from those favoring a more aggressive stance against Mexico. His leadership was marked by efforts to stabilize Texas and navigate its complex political landscape.
Sam Houston was never US President, but he was the first and third president of the Republic of Texas, US Senator when Texas joined the US, and ultimately Governor of Texas. He did not serve consecutive terms as president, because the Constitution of the Republic of Texas prohibited that.
After winning independence from Mexico in 1836, Texas chose Sam Houston as its first president. Houston was a prominent military leader during the Texas Revolution and played a crucial role in securing Texas's independence. He served as president twice, first from 1836 to 1838 and again from 1841 to 1844.
After Texas was annexed in 1845, Sam Houston served as the first elected President of the Republic of Texas from 1836 to 1838 and again from 1841 to 1844. Following annexation, he became a U.S. Senator from Texas, serving from 1846 to 1859. Houston was a prominent advocate for the interests of Texas in Congress and worked on issues such as land policies and relations with Native American tribes. His political career continued as he later served as the Governor of Texas from 1859 to 1861.
After the many wars that Texas fought to gain their independence from Mexico they had alot of dept. Sam Houston was the first president of the Republic of Texas. He helped Texas get out of some of the dept but not all of it. Since each president could only have 2 years per term Sam Houston could not be elected again. The second president of Texas was M. B. Lamar, he however put Texas in more dept than what is was after Sam Houston's first term. After M. B. Lamar's 2 year term Sam Houston became the president of the Republic of Texas. Again Sam Houston helped Texas out of dept but not completely. The 4th term president of the Republic of Texas was Anson Jones. Jones was not president long before Texas became the 28th state of the Unites States. The United States helped Texas out of dept. When Texas wanted to be annexed be the United States some Americans refused because they didn't want to pay the dept that Texas was in. At some point Texas was annexed by the United States, and then became dept free.
"In the name of the constitution of Texas, which has been trampled upon, I refuse to take this oath. I love Texas too well to bring civil strife and bloodshed upon her." Sam Houston "Texas will again lift it's head and stand among the nations. It ought to do so, for no country upon the globe can compare with it in natural advantages." Sam Houston Texas is a State of Mind. Texas is an Obsession. Above ALL, Texas is a nation in every sense of the word." Author John Steinbeck
