The Berlin airlift was good and successful idea by the West, due to the fact that they got all the supplies they needed from the other side to the west, without any problem. However, the Berlin Blockade was not a good idea at all. As the Soviets, at the end had lost and free the road and train connection between west and East.
Happened during 1948 when the Russians blocked access to Berlin.
The population of West Berlin at the time of the blockade and airlift (1948-49) was about 2 million.

As I understand it nobody died due to the Soviet blockade of Berlin. The US Air Force began flying in supplies long before that would have become an issue. A few deaths did result from airplane crashes during the airlift operations to supply Berlin. However of course some people did die during the period of the Soviet blockade of Berlin but those were from the usual causes people die from and were not directly connected to the blockade.
