Jacksonville
Florida's capital, Tallahassee, remained under Confederate control during the Civil War. It was the only Confederate state capital not captured by Union forces throughout the conflict. Despite several military campaigns in Florida, Tallahassee's strategic location and the presence of Confederate troops helped it resist Union occupation. As a result, it served as a stronghold for the Confederacy until the war's end.
Florida was under British control from 1763 to 1783. It was under Spanish control until 1763, and it returned to Spanish control in 1783.
SPAIN controlled Florida in 1754. The Spanish controlled Florida from 1513–1821, with a twenty year break from 1763-1783, when the territory was briefly under British control. After 1821, the territory switched to being under United States control, under which it remains to this day.
