When Abe Lincoln was a child he was an uneducated hick. You would not be able to understand him if he were speaking directly to you. The words they used had no standard usage. They did their best at repeating the sound the words made even though those words weren't used correctly to begin with. When Abe was 19, he took a trip by flatboat to New Orleans. While he was there, he learned that city people had a different way of speaking. If he wanted to fit in, he would have to learn their way of speaking. Lincoln was a hick, but he wasn't stupid. He learned to speak correctly. Lincoln could revert back to his hillbilly way of speaking whenever he wished and he used it to entertain and amuse people.

As a small child, Lincoln had to work the fields. Every day, all day. The only time he got off was when it rained and he couldn't work the fields. They grew their food, hunted, and made everything they had by hand. Their home, the chairs, the bed, the eating table, everything, they made themselves. Their house had no glass windows. There was no cooking stove, no books, no kerosene lamps. They were poor. They were able to buy a few things: an ax, needle and thread, etc. Mostly they bought tools to be used in making the things they needed.

After Lincoln's mother died, Thomas' new wife created the desire in Abe to learn to read. She also made Thomas stop drinking. Things got a little better for Abe.
