To keep them away, people traditionally place a colander at their door, believing the creatures get caught in the holes while counting the holes until dawn, thus preventing their entry. Additionally, burning a special kind of incense or keeping a fire lit in the hearth is thought to deter them. Other practices include hanging garlic or using protective amulets.
