What is New York's nickname and why?

The reason why the state New York got it's nickname for the Big Apple is because the a certain New York band made a song called The Big Apple and also one of the reasons why is because they have so many thing made from apples and they have a lot of apples. Another nickname is the Empire State Building. It got that nickname because a huge building called the Empire State Building. The Empire State building is 611 feet tall and 79,288 square miles.

New york got its nickname because of the tallest buildings. Nice but it received the Nickname of the Empire State ( or words to that effect) from George Washington while visiting as the first President of the United States. Skyscrapers weren't around then.
