New York is also known as "The Big Apple". This was a phrase used by stable lads in the horse racing industry and picked up on by journalist John Fitzgerald.

New York was previously known as New Amsterdam. The area was originally colonised by Dutch settlers in the early 17th century but became New York in 1674 when the area was handed over to the British.
