The Wilmot Proviso (1846) prohibited slavery on any land acquired from Mexico.

The Compromise of 1850 said slavery should be forbidden in all lands taken from Mexico. The Compromise allowed California to be admitted as a free state into the Union.
It was the Wilmot Proviso that said any lands acquired from Mexico would not allow slavery. It was written by David Wilmot, who served as a U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania.

It revived disagreements because the Northerners believed Southerners wanted to expand slavery to new lands.
More southern lands only assured the long term continuation of slavery.
