The British Commonwealth didn't exist until 1950. At the time of World War 1, about 50 countries, comprising 25% of the worlds population, were part of the British Empire. Most of these countries are now self governing nations within the British Commonwealth and some still have Queen Elizabeth II as their Head of State.
