Monday to Friday the normal school hours are 8:00 am to 1:00 pm,

then most of the afternoon is spent doing homework. Some "Gymnasium" (German for University preparatory schools, like Grammar schools, UK or grade schools, US), have lessons for a couple of hours on Saturday morning. The German school system is very different from the American. Elementary school is from first to fourth (in some regions fifth) grade (times are from 8 a.m. to anything beween 11:30 am and 1 pm); after elementary school, students are split up into three different school systems (according to their grades up to that time and the recommendation of the elementary-school teacher): 1. Gymnasium (college track, which continues through Grade 12 or 13 and ends up with the diploma, the "Abitur"), 2. Realschule (continues only through Grade 10; with good grades, student may then continue over on the Gymnasium track), 3. Hauptschule (continues through Grade 10, leads to a very limited diploma with few professional chances. (The hours are from 8 am to 1 or 2 pm) In the case of 2. and 3 students are expected to go into vocational training/apprenticeship after leaving Grade 10, this being at the age of 15 or 16
