The flag displays the Pakistani national colours, white and dark green, with a crescent and star to represent the Muslim majority, and a saffron square to represent the Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh and other minorities of the disputed region, the colours are clearly influenced by the Mughal Empire. The four white stripes symbolize the main rivers of the Kashmir region; Indus, Jhelum, Chenab and Ravi. It also represents the five geographic divisions or provinces of the disputed territory, namely; Baltistan, Gilgit, Jammu region, the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh.
The state emblem is also the flag of the Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir - this is shown in silver thread, whereas the President of the state has an identical banner, but of gold thread. This flag carries the state/province emblems. Here the obvious crescent and star, mountains, and the maple leaf, which is reflective of the abundance of this tree within the state.

Yes, Jammu and Kashmir historically had its own flag in addition to the national flag of India. The flag featured a red background with a white plough, symbolizing the agrarian identity of the region. However, following the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, the separate flag is no longer officially recognized.
