Kauai is the first island west of Oahu in the Hawaiian Islands. The northern and eastern coasts are lushly forested and very tropical, and steeply mountainous. The prevailing winds are from the east, so the clouds are blown up against the mountains and it rains a LOT. The Na Pali coastline on the northern side of the island has more annual rainfall than any other location in the USA.

The southwestern area of Kauai is much dryer than the northeast.
