From my understanding, you have to be a legally married couple. There is no common law in Wisconsin. Thank God. Also, Wisconsin, like California is a marital property state, meaning that everything is split 50/50, debts and assets alike. So if you live in either state and your intended is loaded down with huge bills, I would reconsider marrying that person until they get their credit cleaned up otherwise the creditors will be all over you as well. But if the future spouse is making paper, go for it!
