The largest living lemur is either the Indri or the Diademed Sifaka. Traditionally, the Indri was thought to be the largest, but more recent measurements show that both species average nearly the same in weight.

Within the last 2000 years (since humans arrived on the island), at least 17 species of giant lemur have gone extinct. The largest known lemur was a sloth lemur called Archaeoindris fontoynonti, which was the size of a female gorilla.
