The River Severn is the longest River in the UK.

Although officially considered to be some 220 miles (354 km) long, the Severn starts its life from a small boggy patch, high in the Welsh mountains, on Plynlimon (Welsh Pumlumon).

The water trickles away and forms a stream, which eventually becomes a river, the "River Seven", for the remaining 158 miles (254 km) of its journey to the Bristol Channel. (ref Guinnesss Book of Answers, 1985, p 214)

However, even if the river part of the 'River Severn' is really only 158 miles long, it is still the longest river in the UK.

The longest river exclusively in England though is the 'Thames' at 215 miles (346 km) long.

INTERESTING FACTS

With a 14.5 metre (48 ft) rise and fall between peak high and low tides, the tidal estuary of the Severn seems to have the second largest tidal range in the world.
