In September 2014, a fisherman found a dead colossal squid floating in the Southern Ocean that weighed 770 pounds, with an eye that measured 14 inches in diameter. She was about 3.6 meters long.

Sadly, she was not named, but was otherwise described as a 'perfect specimen'. Her scientific name is Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni, and she is the only member of this genus.

Finding these animals is rare, since they are an important part of the food chain in the Southern Ocean, being a prime food source for Sperm Whales.
