Ethiopia is a country having the poorest health system in the world. Maternal and infant mortality rates are among the highest. The overall health care system depends on low level health workers rather than doctors. Ethiopian doctors contributed very little for the recent improvement of the country's health care. There were about 2100 doctors ten years back and this number has become 1900 currently. It is estimated that about 150 doctors are graduated every year from the three medical schools and most of them migrate. Those who work in the country are concentrated in major cities and have very little contribution for preventive medicine, which is believed to be the most important aspect of health care for the poor rural people contributing about 85% of the total population. Health Extension Workers are the major contributors for the advancement of health care system in Ethiopia and for the achievement of Millennium Development Goals.
