It's original name was Milh, which in Arabic means 'salt', possibly referring to the salty water of the Persian Gulf or to the salty marshes that surround the city. It has been called Abu Dhabi for the past 300 years or so- in Arabic this means 'Father of the Gazelle', as there used to be quite a number of wild Gazelles that inhabited the region, and the city may have been named after that. Some Bedouins call the city 'Umm Dhabi', meaning 'Mother of Deer'.
