After research in 2005, the city of Nijmegen declared that Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands. Whether Nijmegen, Maastricht or Voorburg is the oldest city depends on your definition of city. Usually it means that inhabitants lived in the place uninterrupted and that the city is a Municipium. Which means that it got official Roman city rights.

It's estimated that Nijmegen, in Latin known as 'Novio Magus' (literally new market, indicating that it was used as a trading town), exists since year 5, because it celebrated it 2000th birthday in 2005.
