What is the oldest pub in the UK?

The Guinness Book of Records lists The Olde Fighting Cocks in St Albans Hertfordshire as the oldest pub dating from 1539. However, there are at least two other pubs which claim to be older. Their problem is that they can't prove it.

There are several claimants to the title.

Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in St Albans is recognised by the Guinness book of world records as the oldest.

However Ye Olde Man & Scythe in Bolton, Lancashire has claimed it is older by some 234 years. Another contender is Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem in Nottingham which is claimed to date from the 11th century.
