Sildenafil, the active ingredient of Viagra, was originally developed by a team of pharmaceutical researchers in Kent, England who we're looking into the benefits of sildenafil on hypertension and other cardiovascular conditions including angina. The first clinical study of Sildenafil, as conducted at the Morriston Hospital, Swansea, showed that Viagra had little or no effect on any of the conditions it was originally developed for however they did find that the drug had induced erections within a significant number of test subjects. As a result, Pfizer quickly rethought their plans for Sildenafil and Viagra and soon born. The drug itself, as indicated on Pfizer's patent for the drug as registered in 1996, was created by Albert Wood and Peter Dunn. However, this is a 'fact' that Pfizer heavily dispute claiming that the two 'inventors' are only present on the patent as a matter of convenience for the global pharmaceutical giant.
