the English suffix -ism signifies either (the doctrine of) or (a belief in) so a communist would adhere to communism, a capitalist would adhere to capitalism.

The word 'cult' refers to the basic set of rules, dogma, customs or whatever that define a particular culture. (Any sensible person should be able to see that cult is the root word of culture.) So cultism would be 'a belief in or the study of the doctrines of cults'; similar to what spirits are to spiritualism.

Now the word 'cult' doesn't mean today what it was initially created to mean. It has taken on a bad connotation which has become the only thing people think of when they heard the word. Sort of what the Latin and the Spanish words for 'black' have become (the n-words). Now-a-days the word 'cult' means 'a bunch of people with dangerous beliefs'.

So 'cultism' has become a bad word in much the same way 'racism' has become a bad word. It is one of the words that spiteful people use in order to incite bad feelings.
