It was named for a nearby stream, which drains the southern part of the county. The name "Scappoose" is of Native American (Chinook) origin, and is said to mean "gravelly plain."

Regrettably, since the rivers have been damned and dredged to improve shipping, create electricity and build resevoirs, the "gravelly plain" has been submerged and washed out.
