Mick is the shorter version of the name Michael.

It is also a derogatory term for an Irishman, presumably because many Irish names begin with Mc. In Northern Ireland the protestants use the term to refer to Catholics. I understand it is also the root of the derogatory term for an Hispanic person. Since both groups were predominantly Roman Catholic, Spanish speaking people became known as Spicks (Spanish Micks).
