Caatinga (from Tupi: caa (forest) + tinga (white) white = forest) is the only exclusively Brazilian biome, which means that much of their biological heritage can not be found anywhere else on the planet. This name derives from the white landscape presented by the vegetation during the dry season, most plants lose leaves and stems become whitish and dry. The caatinga occupies an area of about 850,000 square kilometers, about 10% of the country, comprising continuously part of the states of Maranhao, Piaui, Ceara, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraiba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, Bahia (Northeast region Brazil).
From the standpoint of vegetation, the region is classified as savanna scrub steppe. However, the landscape is quite diverse, with distinct regions, whose differences are due to rainfall, soil fertility and soil type and topography.
