Back in like 1957, they gathered all the students in Neyland Stadium and had people from all over bring in animals, mostly dogs, to allow the students to vote on which one they liked best. All the animals were pure-bred show dogs and such. This one farmer brought his blue tick hound and when it got out onto the field, it started howling. The students erupted in cheers, falling in love with the dog, who was named smokey. Now the University is on Smokey 9, who decends from the same blood line as the original.
