The width of the United States, measured from its easternmost point to its westernmost point, is approximately 2,800 miles.
Alaska is the westernmost state in the continental US. Washington state is the westernmost state in the 48 contiguous states. Hawaii is usually counted as the westernmost of all the states. However, technically, the little islands at the end of the Aleutian Islands chain are farther west than Hawaii. However that is just a tiny bit of Alaska. Alaska is actually the easternmost state in the US. Alaska is the northernmost, westernmost, and easternmost state in the US. It is easternmost because the Aleutian Islands extend past the 180 degree line of longitude, putting them in the Eastern hemisphere, which makes it the easternmost state in the United States. The easternmost of the lower 48 states is Maine.
There were 48 states in the United States in 1945. Both Alaska and Hawaii were not yet US states at that time.
