A walled city is any city which is encircled and thus defended by a wall. These tend to be relics of older eras when walls may have been needed as physical deterrent against attack. Though many walls have fallen down or dismantled over the centuries, many ancient cities still have preserved parts of their walls.

In some instances, castles may also be considered walled cities. They served the same defensive purpose and the great number of people required to serve those living in the castle and make it self-suffecient sometimes boosted the population to a level which could be equivalent to a regular town.
