New York and New Jersey own Ellis island the original deal was that new york would own the island but new jersey owns the water around it so when Ellis island was expanded new jersey owned the newer part. Not many people are allowed to see the new jersey side though now because like Alcatraz many of the buildings are not stable
Both the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island are in the state of New Jersey, NOT New York. Both are in New York Harbor just off Liberty State Park, NJ. Geographically, both are in the state of New Jersey. The Statue of Liberty is on a 12 acre island - Liberty Island - formerly known as Bedloe's Island.See http://www.aboutnewjersey.com/Regions/Gateway/Hudson/JerseyCity/statue-of-liberty.php
New York State and New Jersey share sovereignty over Ellis Island. The original, natural portion of the island belongs to New York State, and is part of New York City. The portion that was artificially created by landfill, as well as the underwater portion, belongs to New Jersey, and is part of Jersey City.

There are 2 portions of New York City that are totally surrounded by New Jersey (on the North, East, South and West). These portions are Liberty Island (in its entirety) and a small portion of Ellis Island. Ellis Island was divided into New York and New Jersey portions by the US Supreme Court in the 1990s. New Jersey claimed both the islands, but they were originally defined as New York land inside of New Jersey water by agreement between the two states. In the early 1900s, during the building of the New York City Subways, much of the earth removed for the system was used as landfill all around the original Ellis Island, making it much larger. The Supreme Court held that only the original land belonged to New York. The landfilled area, originally under water, was determined to be New Jersey.
Liberty Island, which may be in New York, and may be in New Jersey, there is disagreement about this. The Statue of Liberty is on Liberty Island in Upper New York Bay. New York and New Jersey share jurisdiction over the island. The part that lies above sea level belongs to New York, while the part that is submerged belongs to New Jersey
Yes, though they're just called Jersey and York respectively. Jersey is an island just off the coast of Normandy, France, while York is a city in England.
