The primary jobs available were related to trade and commerce, including positions as traders, laborers, and ship crews. The port attracted various ethnic groups, leading to jobs in agriculture, fishing, and small-scale manufacturing. Additionally, roles in administration and law emerged as the British established governance over the island.

The Sultanate of Johor used Singapore as a trading port for a while in the 16th and 17th centuries, however the Portuguese burnt that port city down in the early 1600s. The island remained pretty much forgotten until Sir Raffles arrived and set up a British trading post.
