Traditionally, in rural areas and small towns Hungarians built 'long and low' houses, often of one storey only, or one and a half storeys. Some also have cellars. In cities that were formerly fortified (walled) they had to build upwards, but in general land use wasn't very economical. Budapest experienced very rapid expansion indeed from 1850 onwards and except in a few small areas the housing consists of appartment blocks of up to about 7 or 8 floors along the boulevards and 3 to 5 on narrower streets.
