Bay of campeche
Most oil and natural gas is located on the lowlands across the Gulf of Mexico, as well as on the continental shelf off the Bay of Campeche. On the interior, there are several oil fields but are more difficult to exploit. Mineral coal (lignite) fields are found on northern Mexico.
The Bay of Campeche, which is part of the larger Gulf of Mexico, is located west of the Yucatan Peninsula. It touches the Mexican states of Veracruz, Tabasco and Campeche, and is the area where most of Mexico's oil fields -- and its corresponding offshore platforms -- are located.
